The standard Radio on many Smart Fortwo’s, is the Smart Radio 9, made for Smart, by Visteon.
The “Radio 9” came in two different versions. A VP6 model that only plays audio CD’s and a VP7 model that can play MP3’s from CD.
The change from VP6 to VP7 happened together with the model year 2007-2008.
Removal
If you need to remove the Radio 9, you can do it by removing 5 Torx screws.
To see the first screw, you have to remove the button bank. This is done by pulling it toward you with a firm grip.

Upgrade
It’s not too difficult to upgrade the radio 9, to a more capable 2-DIN model, and by doing this, you can get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB radio.
This article shows how I upgraded my Radio 9 to a Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB with CarPlay.
