With the right test equipment, you can hook up to your Smarts computer. Here you can see live information, read/erase error codes and in some instances program and change the cars parameters.
Simple OBDII testers
With these you can read error messages, sometimes erase them, and see live data like RPM and turbo boost levels.

Generic auto testers
I’ve been looking at the testers from iCarsoft.
The new v3.0 looks very useful, as it has got an update with bidirectional tests, and new functions compared to previous models.

High end garage testers
Companies like Bosch make universal testers for garages, that are far too expensive for garage do-it-yourself’ers liike me.
Original Mercedes/Smart testers
There are plenty of used Mercedes Benz Star testers on the market. These are a hardware unit, that connects to the Smart’s OBDII port, as well as a laptop with the Mercedes Software.
These aren’t cheep, and I’m not sure Mercedes likes the idea that they are available, but it seems that some garages do sell the old unit when they buy a new one.
I have been lucky enough to have a fellow Smart Fortwo owner bringing one to a meet, that took a look at my fuel rail sensor error.
Do you have a tester? If so please share what model, and why you chose to buy that specific one.
