All season, or Summer and Winter tyres?

I know that the topic of All season vs Summer and Winter tyres is a hotly debated one, that can get borderline religious.

Until very recently, I couldn’t dream of not having two sets of wheels for any car I owned (except for my old Ford Mustang that never saw a winter road, and my even older Land Rover, that ran on knobbly off-road tyres all year).

The rest would have a set with summer tyres (often wider, and on alloy rims), and a set of winter tyres (often narrower, and on the original steel rims).

However, the past few years, the car clubs (eg. Danish FDM and German ADAC) have been saying that their tests reveal, that some high-end all-season tyres actually live up to their name, can be used in the cooler Scandinavian climate AND wear the “3PMSF” (Three Peak Mountain SnowFlake) symbol, that is demanded for use in wintertime in countries like Germany and Sweden.

That and the fact that winters aren’t as bad as they were, just a few years ago, means that I have plans to try out a set of 3PMSF approved All Season tyres, this time.

However, I do want to read a lot of tests before ordering the tyre, as I know how fast the Smart Fortwo likes to change direction, on a slippery surface.
